Scientific Advisory BoardMartin Raff
Scientific Advisory Board Chairman
Martin Raff trained as a clinical neurologist at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, before working as a postdoctoral fellow in immunology with Avrion Mitchison at the National Institute of Medical Research in London. He then moved with Mitchison to UCL, where he has been ever since, funded for 31 years by an MRC Programme Grant for Developmental Neurobiology. He is currently Emeritus Professor in the MRC Laboratory for Molecular Cell Biology at UCL. Raff has attained many prestigious awards and honours: he is a Fellow of the Royal Society, a Foreign Associate of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA, and was President of the British Society of Cell Biology (1991-1995) and Chairman of the UK Life Sciences Committee (1997-2001). During his time in the latter position, he campaigned to raise PhD students' stipends and was instrumental in developing the first four-year PhD programme (with initial lab rotations) in the UK, a scheme now being implemented at a growing number of research institutes and universities across the country.
