Fabrics of Life Workshop on the theme of Evolution
l’Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Decoratifs, Paris
2009 celebrates the bicentenary of Charles Darwin, who proposed the theory of natural selection as a mechanism to explain evolution. Darwin’s theory has had an enormous impact within and beyond the scientific community. The third Fabrics of Life workshop explored the theme of evolution with talks from leading evolutionary biologists and participation from professional artists and designers in a bid to celebrate scientific discovery through the media of design and fashion.
The workshop - a collaboration between the Curie Institute and ENSAD - was funded by the Epigenome Network of Excellence. Hosted and organised by Jean-Paul Longavesne (ENSAD), Sara Franceschelli (ENSAD), Genevieve Almouzni (Curie Institute), Edith Heard (Curie Insitute), Brona McVittie (MRC Clinical Sciences Centre) and Carole Collet (Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design) this event explored the use of art and design as a means to communicate and engage a wider audience in science.
Following a series of diverse presentations a workshop was held for ENSAD students and the participating speakers to brainstorm ways to conceptualise evolutionary principles in design models.
