Commemorating Women in Life Science

The limited-edition print of Suffrage Science was launched on Wednesday 9th March 2011 with a debate at the Institute of Contemporary Arts entitled: Are Women Changing Science?

Leading scientific researchers and artists discussed the continuing under-representation of women in science. Vivienne Parry (science writer and BBC Radio 4 broadcaster) quizzed Britain’s brightest thinkers: Professor Dame Sally C Davies (Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health), Professor Uta Frith (Emeritus Professor of Cognitive Development, UCL), Professor Carol V Robinson (Royal Society Professor, Department of Chemistry, University of Oxford), Professor Mary Collins (Dean of Life Sciences, UCL) and Liliane Lijn (NASA artist in residence) on women's progress in science in the past century.

Matt Bishop (Neurophysiology Group, CSC) took some photos of the launch event at the Institute of Contemporary Arts.

The MRC Clinical Sciences Centre asked eight leading scientists about the female pioneers that inspired them. The resulting publication marks a century of International Women's Day in March 2011. Suffrage Science, produced by the PEMG team at the CSC, recognises the pioneering contributions of women to life science and touches on some of the issues they still face in science today.

Central St Martins College of Art & Design marked the occasion by producing a bespoke jewellery and textiles collection, which references the suffrage movement that fought for equal voting rights at the start of the last century. Designs were awarded to leading female researchers as heirlooms, which they will pass on to future generations of women scientists.

The Guardian online featured some of the women from Suffrage Science.
