Research FacilitiesPublic Engagement, Media & Grants Facility
The Public Engagement, Media & Grants (PEMG) Facility organises a diverse range of outreach and engagement projects to encourage public interest in science. We also support CSC researchers in print and digital media management and provide up-to-date information on research funding. Our work is tailored to the needs of multiple stakeholders and our team strives to enhance the Institute’s reputation and promote CSC research to a broad audience.
Our public engagement portfolio encompasses initiatives that marry the sciences with the arts along with projects that engage young minds in contemporary research.
Public Engagement
This year Suffrage Science marked the centenary of International Women’s Day (March 8th 2011) with a publication to commemorate 35 remarkable female life scientists. Twelve jewellery heirlooms – awarded to ‘Suffrage’ Scientists – will be passed on annually to the next generation of top women scientists. Last year NOBELini invited teams of young scientists and designers to compete for the chance to exhibit science-inspired designs at the Science Museum's Dana Centre in February 2010. Nobel Textiles married five Nobel prize-winners to five leading Textile and Fashion Designers from Central Saint Martins to produce an exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Arts and St James’s Park in 2008. And the ICA formerly hosted a live sequencing lab (GenesTalking) to engage the public in the hunt for a disease gene in 2005.
Education
Virtual Lab currently brings contemporary scientific research into the classroom, inviting students UK-wide to participate in real-time bench research through our interactive web-interface. Creative Science for Schools launched a programme to engage young minds in key scientific theories through animation in 2009. Scopic for Schools inspired primary and secondary school children in London and Durham to create their own microscopic and telescopic artwork and stories for exhibition at the Royal Albert Hall in 2008.
Media
PEMG is also responsible for the maintenance and development of the CSC and affiliated websites, such as the European Epigenetics Portal that make science accessible to the broader scientific community as well as the layperson. We provide digital and print support to CSC scientists, facilities and administration. For more information and resources, visit our media website.
Grants
To support our public engagement work we source external grants and also provide up-to-date information on research grants for scientists.
