This is the academic timeline for full-time PhD students. Part-time students have a 72 month deadline.

  Month 1 Induction and Lecture Series
 

6 weeks

Submission of Research Plan to mentors

  12 weeks Submission of Research Plan and form to PSA
  1 week before presentation Submission of Early Stage Assessment report to mentors
 

9 months

Presentation at 1st year PG student seminar series and meeting with Mentors. Early Stage Assessment forms submitted to PSA directly afterward

Year 2

2 weeks before presentation

Submission of Late Stage Assessment report to mentors

 

18 months

Presentation at 2nd year PG student seminar series and meeting with Mentors. Late Stage Review forms submitted to PSA directly afterward

Year 3

36 months

Complete experimental work, start writing up and submit thesis as soon as possible

  36 months Organise and present 3rd Year Student Symposium
 

37 months

Year 3 Review meeting with mentors and form submitted to PSA

Year 4

4 months before thesis submission

Submit PhD examination entry forms

  48 months Absolute deadline for submission of thesis

Assessment of Postgraduate (PhD) students
The procedures applying to students registered after 1 October 2010 are laid down in the Student Handbook, beginning on page 13. Procedures for student registered prior to 1 October 2010 are in Appendix E of the handbook. Imperial College Academic and Examination Regulations are available here.

Guidelines for Mentors
Every postgraduate student is assigned two academic mentors to assess their progress and provide support throughout their studentship. Guidelines for PhD Mentors are available here and in the Student Handbook.

Information for supervisors on recruiting and training students, requirements to be a supervisor and procedures for common problems that arise, are in the Guidelines for Supervisors and the in the Student Handbook.
