October 2010 - New Student Welcome Evening
Each year the existing PhD students meet and chat to the new students who join us in October. It is always a very good event, where everyone can get to know each other and meet some friendly faces.

October 2010 - Royal Society lecture http://royalsociety.org/
Around 30 of the PhD students attended a lecture by Prof. Ian Wilmut, well known for the cloning of Dolly the Sheep. The talk was entitled ‘Cloning, stem cells and regenerative medicine’. It summarized the existing advances in the field of stem cell reprogramming and highlighted some potential benefits of this type of research. The talk was followed by an outing to a local restaurant which was a fun way to discuss both scientific and non-scientific topics!

December 2010 - Christmas Party
Each year a Christmas party is held for the whole institute and previously a few students and post-docs were asked to help out with the organisation. This year the student community gladly volunteered to organise the Christmas Party and put on a fantastic event, with really positive feedback. Most people from the institute, both staff and students alike came along for food, drink, music and other entertainments.

January 2011 - PhD Interviews and Pizza Party
The student community gets very actively involved in the interviews for new PhD students, helping Anne Soutar and Kate Baird to make the interviews run more smoothly and providing the candidates with an opportunity to mingle with the existing students. We organised tours around the different parts of the CSC. Once all the interviews were over we had more informal chats with the candidates over pizza, beers, wine and music.

July 2011 - Undergraduate Symposium
As part of the annual CSC summer student programme around 25 undergraduate students came to the institute for a day to discover more about life as a PhD student. The CSCSC was closely involved with this event, offering advice and organising an informal drinks party at the end of the day for everyone to enjoy.

As often as possible we organise trips to nearby bars and pubs to chill out and catch up after a day in the lab and we always make sure we celebrate the end of upgrades and seminars that students work hard towards with free beers and wine.
When the weather is good there is often a group of students eating lunch together out on Wormwood Scrubs and someone will always bring a Frisbee for some outdoor games. We know that the community of students at the CSC is a friendly group of people and we want to enhance the experience that people have here...so get involved!
