The rapidly expanding program of small animal imaging at the Hammersmith campus has initially focussed on PET and MR as imaging modalities. Ultrasound has many unique advantages, however, including low cost, ease of use, portability, convenient imaging of blood flow (Doppler), the ability to guide therapy, microbubble contrast agents with tissue specific properties and, importantly, the potential to direct gene and other therapies.

Through a MRC JREI grant we have a dedicated high-end commercial system (Siemens Acuson Sequoia™ 512 with 15L8 probe) able to perform high frame rate B-mode (200 Hz plus), M-mode (500Hz), and all Doppler modes at up to 15 MHz frequency, with minimal or even no sedation. This platform offers the best high frequency imaging of any commercial ultrasound system. We also have transoesophageal capability in small animal models using the 'AcuNav' catheter system. A pig ultrasound facility will also be implemented shortly (Dorian Haskard).
